The story goes that some college students started making furniture out of old shipping crates. Their friends told their friends who told their friends, and before long a whole new look in furniture had been invented. Barn Door capitalized on that look with what is commonly called "crate" furniture. Virtually indestructible, it boldly goes where no furniture ever dared go before; into college dorms, kid's bedrooms, hunting cabins, rec rooms. Now you can even get sleep sofas, wall units and computer desks. Hey, do your whole house in it. Why not? Basement, living room, attic, why not even in the back of your new mini-van? Take those back seats out and voila! You've got a true utility vehicle. Available in two finishes. Barn Door also has a commercial/contract division.

Bauer International, Inc. is an importer and designer of British & Dutch Colonial Plantation furniture and travel accessories from the East & West Indies. Originally gracing the 19th century verandahs and grand estates of the planter, these pieces now bring the romance of the African Savannah and the tradewinds of Barbados into your home. Individually hand-crafted out of teak, mahogany, rattan, seagrass, and leather, hand caned, the 450 piece collection reflects the rich culture of both the native people and the British and Dutch who colonized the archipelagos from the late 1600's. Traveling around the world, from enchanting Java to the Serengeti, Kenneth and Dee Ann Bauer retrace the steps of the British and Dutch colonists in search of the original antiques of that era. These select pieces are then recreated using century old wood working techniques of the master craftsman. Bauer is the exclusive licensee of PGA clubhouse furniture. Other collections include: Le Campagne, Royal Palm, Viceroy, Stiles Brothers and Coastal home.

BAUSMAN AND COMPANY

Founded in Ontario, California in 1971. That's California not Canada. Wonder how many times they hear that? With the exception of the herringbone tabletops (which are white oak), all the wood on their furniture is Western Alder. Western alder is a close or fine grained hardwood similar to Cherry, Birch and Maple. It has a density or hardness comparable to Appalachian Soft Maple. It is extremely uniform in its light tan or honey color, and there is no color difference between heartwood and sapwood. This makes Alder much easier to match and finish, because kiln dried Alder presents no problem with sap, mineral streaks, dark color or stain. Every piece we manufacture is carefully milled and assembled authentically in keeping with the trends and techniques of the period. A few modern materials have been incorporated for practical reasons (i.e. to avoid shrinkage and warpage in unstable climate regions.) Mortise and tenon and dovetail joints are used where possible. Raised panels and tongue and groove planks are framed freely in dadoes on doors and panels to enable the wood to expand and contract during season changes. They use the term "bench made" to indicate that each individual piece is assembled from beginning to end at the bench of a skilled craftsman. This creates a sense of pride of craftsmanship and improves consistent workmanship dramatically. Their metal drawer slides are manufactured by Accuride who has a long history for providing the best quality drawer slides in the industry. Decorative hardware such as hinges, drawer pulls, locks, and escutcheons are all imported from France especially for Bausman. The secret that sets their look apart from our competitors is in the distressing. Surprisingly the training that goes into the distressing is as important and time consuming as that of the actual furniture construction. Products include: armoires, entertainment centers, kitchen chairs, tables, occasional furniture and some upholstery. This text was adapted from information provided on the Bausman and Company web site.

Few of the Bernhardt groups have a clear-cut style such as 18th century or French because the company has an exceptional ability to create timeless classics which blend features from many styles and periods of history. Bernhardt is maintaining an exceptional name brand recognition and level of product quality that is going to make them one of the most important upper end furniture manufacturers in the world. The Martha Stewart line is still one of the most popular collections Bernhardt has, and for good reason. The collection is beautifully done with just the right amount of style and practicality, why are we not surprised? Unfortunately, as of May 2004, Bernhardt is still enforcing Miniumum Retail Pricing.

The Big Fish story begins with a serendipitous meeting of Melissa Van Hise, the owner of Big Fish, Inc., an art distribution company, and Roger Miles, the owner of a retail framing business. Their companies were merged and the new Big Fish, Inc., a framed wall decor manufacturer, was formed. When Big Fish, incorporated in 1989, it was a small shop representing artists in the Southeast. Today, Big Fish is an international framed art manufacturer distributing for artists from all over the world. At Big Fish, talented designers incorporate innovative framing techniques with a variety of images including hand-colored prints, limited editions, and posters, to create products that are not available from other sources. Hundreds of new trends setting designs are released semi-annually. Big Fish has journeyed abroad several times in the last year, successfully finding exclusive sources for new mats and moldings that are not available here in the States. Some of the most recent and most popular framing techniques are the addition of many hand-made frames, as well as gesso mats imported from England. These pieces create a look that is truly one-of-a-kind. According to Melissa Van Hise, owner and CEO, "We have a formula that really works. We have unique images and a great line of moldings for a fair price. Plus we offer incredible service and very efficient delivery. In June of 1999, Big Fish shifted gears again, and moved to a new location in Laurel, Maryland. We added lots of new offices (and personnel to match), and more than doubled our design and production areas. With our new facility, we hope to give you even faster turn around time, and with the added personnel, even greater attention to your individual needs.

It is so refreshing to find a company that makes contemporary furniture of decent quality, that the average person can afford. They make office furniture that is so stylistically clean it is almost fun just to look at. Of course, in an office setting you don't want people talking about your furniture more than they talk about your fine work, but if you want that to happen then put out superior quality work and quit whining. Contact the company for their catalog on bedroom furniture, occasional tables that are absolutely fantastic, and wall units and other pieces that you wish you had thought of.

The Bombay Company began in New Orleans in the late 1970's, when a man named Brad Harper began selling inexpensive reproductions of 18th and 19th Century traditional English furniture. He advertised his mahogany-finished butler's tables and nightstands in magazines, then shipped the unassembled items to customers, who put them together in their homes. The name Bombay was Harper's idea. He associated the most glorious days of the British Empire with India, and its crown jewel, the city of Bombay. In 1978, Canadian Robert Nourse purchased the rights to develop The Bombay Company in Canada, which included access to the overseas supply channels Harper had established, mainly in Taiwan. Mr. Nourse decided to put Bombay's products into small stores in shopping malls. He believed the concept would attract "impulse shoppers" looking for an attractive product at a very good value. And because unassembled furniture took up so little space, the company didn't need a lot of extra storage room. Bombay's ready-to-assemble furniture also provided immediate gratification: customers could walk out with what they wanted rather than wait weeks for delivery. In 1980, Mr. Harper sold his mail-order business to Tandy Brands, Inc., a holding company in Fort Worth, Texas. Realizing the huge potential of the Bombay concept, Tandy Brands wanted to own the concept for all of North America and, in 1981, bought the Canadian rights from Mr. Nourse, with Nourse continuing to manage the Canadian operation. Bombay's recipe for success was convenience, value and fashion. Customers rapidly adopted the concept due to its fashionable, take-with product.
The Bombay Look
The style and tone of Bombay reflects a sophisticated look featuring classic and traditional furniture, as well as coordinating accessories and wall decor. Bombay quickly migrated away from merely reproducing antiques and began designing its own proprietary home furnishings while remaining true to the roots of its traditional style. The result was a unique, fashion focused and desirable product line. Responding to customers' requests beginning in the early 90's, Bombay expanded into larger pieces of furniture. Staying current with customers' needs and everyday lifestyle changes, Bombay now offers complete collections focused on the rooms that are most relevant to the customer---the home office, bedroom, dining room and family rooms. In the Fall of 1997, Bombay took an innovative step across the country with the introduction of an updated palm tree logo and the opening of new and/or renovated stores, reminiscent of turn-of-the-century mercantile buildings. The new look is much more in keeping with today's retail environment and results in a more pleasurable shopping experience for our customers.

Brandt started in 1901 in the Hagerstown, Maryland area. The company went out of business in 1985, but a few years ago, a couple of former employees bought the company and restarted production. Many of my readers write me asking about Brandt furniture they've inherited or purchased at estate sales. I regret I can't tell you any value for your furniture, my expertise in is new furniture. I've included the factory contact information, but I can also tell you they won't know the value of your furniture either. They'd like you to buy new pieces from them! There is one anecdotal story about Brandt that made them infamous. In 1953, at the height of the Cold War, Julius and Ethel Rosenburg were executed for treason. The only concrete evidence presented at their trial was a photograph of a Brandt table, in the hallway of the Rosenburg house, which was supposedly used to photograph nuclear secrets which were then passed on to the Soviets. The Rosenburgs claimed their innocence, the Brandt company said they could have done without the negative advertising and the story is still around today.

British Traditions is a manufacturer of authentic European country repoduction furniture.
Founded in 1988, British Traditions is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year. Their market niche is making new furniture that looks genuinely antique and offering it at very reasonable price points. That coupled with an emphasis on design and an attention to detail sets them apart from their competition. Their London Library cabinet, a top seller introduced three years ago, requires nearly 150 individually-applied pieces of moulding. Sturdy mortise-and-tenon construction and dovetailed drawers are standard; tables feature handsomely designed and detailed turnings. The company also offers more than 20 standard finishes, ranging from a hand-applied, traditional English wax finish through painted and distressed alternatives to the currently popular "crackles", to "faux" finishes requiring as many as a dozen separate applications. British Traditions has been uniquely successful in combining the best the past has to offer with a modern production approach to meet the needs and desires of today's furniture buyer.

January 1, 2002, British Century Designs Ltd. (of London, UK and Fairfax, VA) changed their name to BritishFurniture.com to reflect their expanding business.
The factory in East London was founded in 1946 by Jacob Leigh, an established Master Cabinet Maker, as were his forbears. From comparatively small beginnings the firm has grown into a successful business where 3 generations of Master Cabinet Makers have worked together to continue a tradition of quality and service in the field of English Reproduction Occasional, Accent and Dining Room Furniture. The Leigh Family traces there heritage back to the famous Russian Birch groves, in which they used to manage for the Czars. Today the factory receives much of its wood from those same forests!
The English Reproduction collection comprises over 200 different items including: Dining Room Furniture, Bookcases, Wine Tables, Hall Furniture, Secretaries and Desks, Occasional and Accent Items. In addition there is an ever-expanding Home Office and Home Entertainment Collections as well as models exclusively made for storage (e.g. video, audio tapes, compact discs). The factory in London has the ability for its contracts division to produce items of furniture to its customer’s specifications, whilst retaining the authentic traditional appearance of true English Reproduction Furniture. Many successful projects have been completed around the world including: Hotels, Offices, Bars, Restaurants, Clubs and Conference Centers.
The collections offered by BritishFurniture were originally developed for the better department store trade, and sold exclusively through larger department stores in Europe, Japan and the America’s. However, it was determined that there was an opportunity to serve the designer and smaller home furnishing dealers, whom could not purchase large containers of furniture, by establishing a warehouse in North America. BritishFurniture also goes another step further than most “Name Brand” better furniture companies. Because each item is individually bench crafted, their customers do not have to wait 6-12 months in order for the factory to save money by doing a large run. Often, Special Orders ship within 12 weeks or less.

Outdoor and patio furniture in various metals for residential and contract use. Brown Jordan was started in 1945 by Robert Brown and Hubert Jordan. Their design concept was to make new and innovative furniture that was built to last a lifetime. Today, Brown Jordan continues in that tradition. Not only do they continue to win design awards for their innovation and beauty, but their quality of construction is recognized as one of the best in the industry. There are restrictions to their warranty because so much of their furniture is used in commercial settings but for the residential user you can figure on this warranty: Aluminum frame and finish- 15 years, resin and wood- 5 years, wrought iron= 1 year, straps- 5 years, fabrics- 1 year. We are not a Brown Jordan dealer and are not involved in the pricing, displaying or quoting of product specifications about Brown Jordan. Brown Jordan is a division of Brown Jordan International

Solid wood furniture, made in America. There are fewer and fewer companies that can proudly make that claim anymore. Based in in Whitefield, New Hampshire Brown Street enjoys a long history of making quality solid wood furniture in bedroom, dining room, entertainment centers, occasional and home office. Features include dovetail drawers, pegged doors, mortise and tenon joints and solid ledger panels... isn't that how good furniture should be made? With the flood of imports hitting the country and the increasing loss of companies that produce furniture in the U.S, one wonders how Brown Street can survive, much less compete. The answer lies in their committment to traditional New England standards, state of the art technology and a loyal base of customers. One of the most delightful things about the company is the available variety of stained and painted finishes, fifteen at last count. You can't get that option with import furniture. Colors include varying shades of pine, oak and cherry with a few premium painted colors available for an additional charge. You will especially appreciate Brown Street when you compare the price of their furniture to some of the sorry-quality stuff we see in the mail order catalogs and the large furniture chains. No, I don't get paid by Brown Street, but it does irk us to see what you folks are having to pay for junk, when there are still great companies like Brown Street out there consistently making good furniture for good prices. Hence - a great value!

Built by hand from start to finish by one artisan using hand tools to add a warmth and quality not duplicated by machines. They use authentic construction, including - pegged, mortise and tenon joints - dovetailing and hand planing. Their unique finishing uses high solid lacquers, a special blend of stains and "old-fashioned" milk paints. You can be assured of top quality woods such as Cherry, Pine and Tiger Maple.
Available in many beautiful finishes with caredful attention paid to distressing, detailed finishing and fittings appropriate to the period of the piece. Each piece is different reflecting the hand-working and finishing skills of the artisans and then signed to assure authenticity.
The furniture is very low maintenance - Just wipe with a lightly damp cloth.
