But to a man who made a living selling horses to farmers, the need to diversify was becoming a matter of survival. So in 1950, at the age of 54, Arthur Houde went into partnership with a cabinetmaker to start up a furniture factory in the small town of Laurier Station in Canada. The following year he brought his son Paul, in to replace his partner and manage the business. Father and son shared the same vision of success. By the late 50s and early 60s, the company employed 25 workers and had a loyal Canadian customer base. It was incorporated under the name AP Furniture Industries, the initials of the two owner's first names, Arthur et Paul. From the beginning, AP Industries specialized in inexpensive imitation wood furniture for the mass market supplying such major chains as Woodhouse, Légaré and Sears. This high-volume production boosted sales and allowed the company to continually modernize and reach into new markets. By 1972, the company was unionized, operating another furniture plant, a sawmill and an upholstering plant and reaching even stronger into the US market. Daniel Benjamin was named general manager in1984. As the first manager from outside the family, he gave AP Industries a new orientation. Soon three quarters of production was destined for the US market. The imitation wood line of products was dropped in favor of higher-end collections designed for young families and children.
