H & H PO Box 10 Seagrove, NC 27341 336-873-7245, 336-873-7247 fax Remember the Nintendo Chair of the 80's, the floor-height rocker you sat in to play video games? H&H still makes them. As well as bean bag chairs, folding rockers, tailgate tables and bedroom furniture for children. Oops. There's more. Heavy crate style furniture for the cabin or beach house even the family room. And yes, there's more. They have exclusive licensing agreements with just about all the professional sports teams as well as most colleges and universities to put logos on furniture, bean bag chairs and folding game chairs. In fact, when you go into K-Mart or Sears, or look in the Penneys catalog or a lot of internet sites and see furniture with team logos, yep, you'll know who makes them. If you play your cards right, you could probably impress someone with this knowledge. HALE MANUFACTURING ( F.E. HALE ) PO Box 751 650 West German St. Herkimer, NY 13350 (315) 866-4250, (315) 866-6417 FAX Bookcases. Did we mention bookcases? Hale has been making fine furniture since 1907. Today, their specialty is bookcases in oak, walnut and birch. They have a great selection of finishes available for each wood type as well as custom finishes for an upcharge. The actual legal name of the company is F. E. Hale, but no one uses that, everyone simply uses the name Hale. Sometimes people confuse them with Hale of Vermont, a different company that went out of business several years ago. HALE OF VERMONT Went out of business in 1992. In the 1870's Henry Hale took over a small washboard factory near Warm Brook in Arlington, Vermont He converted to the manufacture of furniture and the company grew into East Arlington's largest industrial complex. Hale was very good at design and published a catalogue of chairs and hardwood furniture two years before he purchased the Arlington factory. The Hale company continued to manufacture various lines of high quality furniture until its closing in 1992. HALEY AND CARTER Lexington Home Brands Attn Consumer Services Department PO Box 1008 Lexington NC 27293-1008 tel: 800-LEX-INFO (539-4636) - an automated system, for obtaining dealer locations. O.K., Haley & Carter aren't real people. But that doesn't matter, because they represent a composite of people like Haley & Carter. Young, mobile, hip, trendy, but sophisticated and discerning. Discerning enough to want better quality furniture than what you find from that huge furniture chain, sophisticated enough to want something other than cookie-cutter contemporary. The collection features two different looks, one dark mix of European and Empire styling with quite a bit of good looks for the money. The other is a lighter colored, transitional style that I have to admit is great looking. Haley & Carter is sold under the Lexington Home Brands name. Unfortunately, as of May 2004, Lexington is still enforcing MRP on this line. HAMMARY FURNITURE CO PO Box 760, Lenoir, NC 28645. (828)728-3231, Fax (828)728-5063 In October 1943, after eight years working with furniture manufacturers in the Carolinas and Virginia as a sales representative of the Reliance Varnish Company and Central Glass Company, Hamilton Louder Bruce decided to try his hand at furniture manufacturing. Leasing a small building for $15.00 per month, he hired two helpers and started to manufacture canvas covered lawn chairs. Production amounted to 24 chairs a day. Hammary's history can be traced back to 1943 when Hamilton Louder Bruce decided to try making furniture instead of selling it for other people. Starting with two helpers and a small building they began turning out 24 canvas covered lawn chairs a day. By 1947, Mr. Bruce knew he needed to head in another direction and turned his attention to the occasional table line. He took his idea to furniture stores along the east coast and to his great surprise brought home $200,000 in orders. A princely sum in 1947! The Hammary of table is still easily recognized because of its emphasis on occasional table, home office and upholsterd furniture. Although Mr. Bruce began with mahogany table, the company now incorporates many types of wood as well as glass and leather into their styles. To stay with the time, the newest Hammary pieces are designed with today's TV, and audio/video needs in mind. Many of the entertainment centers can be configured to fit rooms of many settings. In the past several years, Hammary has been branching out into furniture from around the world with trunks, book table and hand-painted chests brought in from many exotic locations. Hammary is a division of La-Z-Boy. HANAMINT CORPORATION 8010 Thorndike Road Greensboro, NC 27409 Tel: 336.855.9141 Fax: (336) 855-8482 Outdoor Furniture HANCOCK AND MOORE P.O. While there are many companies like this in the furniture industry, sadly, they are getting fewer and fewer. One area in the furniture industry that is experiencing a widening gap between the top, most conscientious manufacturers and the cheap import lines trying to turn a quick buck is leather. It all started about ten years ago with the invasion of cheap leather imports from Italy and Mexico. Today, it seems everyone wants get in on the action. Well, fortunately not everyone. Companies like Hancock & Moore still hold to a standard that makes leather furniture a luxury item. Something to be earned. Not that it is out of reach of the average consumer. Quite the contrary. It is expensive, yes. But when one considers the quality of the goods it is really a value and a great buy. Their leather is hand selected from only the finest native hides. They look for consistency of grain which gives them the best surface for color uniformity and richness of hand (insider term for leather texture). They select only "A" grade wood materials such as mahogany, walnut, ash and cherry for the frames, and then use all the techniques that have come to be associated with top quality furniture construction. HENKEL-MOORE 2983 S Pleasant Valley Rd Winchester, VA 22601 (540) 722-2224 HENREDON PO Box 70 Morganton, NC 28680-0070 828.437.5261, 828.437.5264 FAX Henredon was founded in 1945 by four men determined to build furniture of "custom quality." And today, over fifty years later, among people of discriminating taste, the name Henredon represents the best America has to offer. The initial product line consisting of just three chests has mushroomed into hundreds of beautiful wood and upholstery designs for every room. From the one original case goods facility in Morganton, there are now also sizable manufacturing complexes in three other locations in North Carolina. Our original work force of seventy-five employees has grown to approximately seventeen hundred. Henredon's underlying philosophy has always been to make quality furniture for the middle and upper-income end of the market. It reaches these consumers by distributing through better department stores, design studios and upscale furniture stores and by advertising in periodicals that cater to this clientele. Folk wisdom in the furniture industry would have it that success depends upon product, people and programs and certainly Henredon has been blessed with all three. Henredon's unbroken leadership chain has extended from its founders: T.Henry Wilson, Ralph Edwards, Donnell VanNoppen, and Sterling Collet, through Michael K. Dugan, who became Henredon's fifth chief executive officer on November 1, 1987. In the spring of 1996, Henredon became part of Lifestyle Furnishings International, the largest and most comprehensive home furnishings resource in the industry. In addition to Henredon, this family of companies includes such well-known brands as Drexel Heritage, Lexington, Universal, Berkline, BenchCraft, Maitland-Smith and Robert Allen Fabrics. And while Henredon has changed ownership, it will remain what it has been for generations; one of the most respected furniture companies in the industry. Setting the standards for distinction of design, for quality of manufacture and for the kind of pride and dedication to service that has been and will continue to be the major contributor to success. HENRY LINK Lexington Home Brands Attn Consumer Services Department PO Box 1008 Lexington NC 27293-1008 tel: 800-LEX-INFO (539-4636) - an automated system, for obtaining dealer locations. Henry Link is a real person. During the 70's the furniture industry executive loved to travel in search of new and exotic styles and designs. Lexington popularized his most popular treasures in the casual, breezy "wicker" look. From the beaches of Costa Rica to the jungles of the Congo, the open, airy wicker style was a symbol of a carefree lifestyle that Lexington wanted to capture in practical designs that could be produced for the average consumer. They were more than successful and the name Henry Link became synonymous with quality and value in wicker. Today's Henry Link collection includes bedroom pieces in wicker, rattan, bamboo, metal, glass, stone, and leather and a wide range of styles. I'm disappointed that Lexington chose to use MRP pricing on this wonderful furniture, but even at that, it is still a good buy. HERITAGE HAUS FURNITURE Route 1, Box 1641A, Demorest, GA 30535.
