MAC KENZIE-DOW 1041 Hal Greer Boulevard Huntington, W.Va. 25701 tel: (304) 529-0499 fax: (434) 845-8274 Mac Kenzie-Dow has a mission statement, which is fairly unusual in the furniture industry; and considering the escaping sound of furniture manufacturing in the United States, their mission is quite welcome in this business. "To promote, market and sell products manufactured from the Appalachian Hardwood Forests and elsewhere to the Furniture Industry of America." Along with a couple other principles of providing marketing and sales for companies in the Appalachians, this seems to be a defining idea for Mac Kenzie-Dow. That's a long introduction, but it is a good one to set the stage. People don't realize just how important it is to purchase furniture made in the U.S. You can argue about the economic benefits and the mom and apple pie part, and that is certainly all true, although if an industry won't compete then it shouldn't compete. However, most of the furniture made in the U.S. is just better quality than what we're seeing being imported. I know there are exceptions, but for the same price, you can get really good quality here. Take Mac Kenzie-Dow for example. Their three collections, English Pub, County Down and the Oakwood collection feature hardwoods coming primarily, from the Appalachians. The styling is innovative and exciting and the quality of fit and finish are wonderful at their price range. I recommend you check them out on their web site and see what all the excitement is about. Box 3190 2490 Patterson Ave. SW Roanoke, VA 24016 Tel: (540) 342-1111 Fax: (540) 345-4813 When Mario Russo started the Mario Manufacturing Company in 1922, even he could not have possibly foreseen the growth and direction that his small New York based operation would take in the decades to come. Arriving in the United States from Palermo, Italy, Mario worked for a time making ornamental pictures frames. He later became associated with the Crucet Manufacturing Company in making decorative baskets, shades of mica, and a line of decorative floor lamps and torchiers. In 1922, he founded the Mario Manufacturing Company. In addition to producing beautifully hand decorated mica shades, the company became well known for its leather lamps. Mario, located on 26th street in New York, continued to grow and in the 1950's became one of the first companies to import hand crafted lamp bases from Italy. In 1952, upon the death of his father, Vito Russo became President of Mario Manufacturing. Mario Manufacturing expanded and relocated its production facilities to Mount Vernon, New York in the early 1960's. In 1965, Mario innovated the still popular mini lamp. These mini lamps created the transition for lighting to become decorative as well as functional. In 1988, Mario Russo's grandson, Louis Scutellaro, became President and relocated the business to Roanoke, Virginia. Since it's relocation, Mario has become a self contained manufacturer, producing all of its own components. Facilities include Ceramic Production., Woodworking, Permastone, and a comprehensive Lampshade program. Throughout the years, Mario has always manufactured hand crafted leather lamps as the company's signature. In 1997, Mario Industries re-introduced lampshades of genuine mica, reminiscent of the original Mario Designs. Today, Mario, the oldest family owned lamp manufacturer in the country, has grown to include these affiliated companies: Impressions (statues), Lampshades by Mario, Passport Furniture, Masterworks, and Finial Showcase. While serving a loyal International customer base nearly 5000 strong, Mario prides itself on its ability to equally serve both large and small customers, producing lamps of lasting beauty. MCNEILLY CHAMPION FURNITURE PO Box 720 229 Carpenter Grove Church Road Fallston, NC 28042 Tel: 704-538-3226 Fax: 704-538-7373 It's really tough being a start-up company these days. And to start a new furniture company in an already crowded field, middle to high-end upholstery, the challenge is especially daunting. So you have to hand it to anyone willing to try. That's what I've got to do for Jack McNeilly and Mike Champion, two enterprising young guys with 50 years experience in the industry. Focusing on the fabric and leather upholstery market they're working hard to produce a "better mousetrap" and compete by providing great styles and quality at a price that will make them very attractive to both dealers and consumers. In my experience, start up companies like this often provide an exceptional value because they are trying so hard to please and make a name for themselves. Interested dealers can find them at the High Point Market, consumers can call the factory for the name of the closest dealer. Good luck guys! MICHAEL THOMAS FURNITURE PO Box 1275, 100 East Newberry, Liberty, NC 27298. (336)622-3075, (336)622-4112 Wonderful collection of upper medium upholstery. They love to make traditional upholstery and it shows in the care and attention to detail you will find throughout this line. Choose from the standard selection of sofas, loveseats and sleepers as well as specialty chairs, designer chairs and sectionals. Frames, springs, and spring-down cushions are warranted for the life of the furniture, however, they are very careful to note that the warranty is voided if misuse or abuse is detected. That is a very strong warranty from a company in this price range. They can do it though because of the seasoned, kiln-dried hardwood frames, double-doweled joints reinforced with glued and screwed corner blocks; individually eight-way hand-tied double cone coils in the seats resting on resin-coated steel webbing; and individually pocketed spings in the spring-down cushions. Interiors are fully padded and the arms and backs are double covered and padded. Box 819 Taylorsville, NC 28681 (800) 789-5401 The Mitchell Gold Company has a simple vision -- create furniture that makes people feel good. Since its founding in 1989, the company has delivered on this singular vision with a full line of upholstered and slipcovered furniture that have become synonomous with today's relaxed styles of living. "Since 1989, the Mitchell Gold Company has been committed to providing innovative moderately priced upholstery for relaxed styles of living. Instant Gratification is what we want to provide. We have based our company on selling only to retailers who will stock our products and provide them to our customers quickly.
We also look at things another way. Listen to what people want, then create it. We work extremely hard at this, the goal being serendipity at the furniture stores. It's all part of being responsive to what our customers want: basic yet classic furniture with timeless appeal. We call our style current, not traditional or contemporary, but perhaps a new blend of the two. (We avoid trendy; experience shows it ususally makes for regrettable furniture investments.)" |
