Canadian manufacturer of dinette and dining room furniture. I believe they are one of North America's leading solid wood casual dining manufacturers. They are often imitated but never duplicated. Several of the world's leading brand names with custom color casual dining collections use Canadel to make their products because they know the company makes the best products for the best price. But if you want to cut out the middle-man, just buy it direct from a Canadel dealer. All items are availble in your choice of solid birch or select red oak. Select is a superior grade of lumber and is more expensive than birch which explains the upcharge when selecting oak. Choices include traditional, contemporary and country designs that are durable, stylish and easy to live with. There are many exceptions because of design limitations or with everything, but generally here are some of their many options:

Started in 1917 by A. Leon Capel to supply braided rugs, Capel is now the largest and oldest supplier of area rugs in America. But Capel knows that, "big and old don't make you good". To stay on top of the competition and keep its coveted number one slot, a family member runs every area of Capel operation from manufacturing to importing. The company's philosphy has remained the same for 75 years, "Styles and tastes change; appreciation for quality does not." Choices include more than 300 styles and 1000 color combinations including: reversible braided rugs made in Troy, NC; woven and flat weaves from Europe and the Far East; Oriental reproductions; hand hooked in traditional, country, contemporary, and art deco; and hand knotted Indian and Chinese. Each style is offered in a large range of sizes or you can special order a custom size. The catalog faithfully reproduces colors and shows off their styles very well.

What began as a simple business deal between a brassware importer in Mississippi and an exporter in Taiwan has since evolved into one of the leading manufacturers and importers of upscale home accents and reproductions. It all started in 1977 when Mr. and Mrs. G.L. Edwards decided to create a brassware gift and home accessory import company in Jackson, Mississippi. That same year, Simon Shen formed a brassware export company in Taipei, Taiwan and quickly became one of Castilian Imports' vendors. After a solid 12-year business relationship, the Edwards sold Castilian Imports to Mr. and Mrs. Simon Shen. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Shen relocated the company to Houston, Texas and set about expanding and enhancing its offerings. By 1992, Castilian Imports had moved out of the giftware sector and into home décor with a growing selection of higher-end home accessories. New mediums were also introduced into the line as brassware was soon joined by crystal, glass, wood and silver. To communicate the new direction and versatile product selection, the company initiated an aggressive sales and marketing campaign in 1992, which was followed by the launch of a national advertising campaign in 1997. The industry obviously liked what it saw as Castilian Imports experienced exponential sales growth during the period - more than 800% between 1992 and 1999. Further strengthening its position in the home accents market, the company opened its own national showroom at the International Home Furnishings Center in High Point, NC in 1999. By this time, Castilian Imports was also represented by its regional sales force through showrooms in other major mart buildings across the country, including AmericasMart Atlanta, the Dallas Market Center, San Francisco Market Center and the L.A. Mart. Today, Castilian Imports is in the process of expanding its facilities to keep pace with the rapid growth. A 10-acre site in Houston was acquired in 2000 and construction to begin in March 2002 on a new office and warehouse. In addition, the company continues to fine-tune and enhance its operations to insure that customers always receive the quality designs and customer service that have become the company's hallmarks. Handmade wrought iron furniture built in much the same way it was generations ago. The first thing everyone looks for in metal are occasional tables, and Charleston Forge has them: traditional, contemporary, and eclectic. But they also have Baker's racks, bookcases and TV stands in contemporary and traditional designs with metal, glass and oak shelves. Also choose from sleigh beds, canopy beds and poster beds, Shaker style barstools with swivel seats, contemporary dining chairs, quilt racks, settees, pedestals and much more. An all around line for the hot look in metal. Available in 10 metal finishes, 7 oak finishes. Custom colors are available as well as custom metal work. Charleston Forge recently invested in a finishing system which, according to their president, "is not only 100% environmentally safe, but will also provide the most durable baked-on finish available." The story of how this company rose from near bankruptcy to leader in the metal industry is an inspiring tale that should be in the Reader's Digest. Their blood, sweat and tears have produced a great product made with integrity and pride. This company made a fine reputation the old fashioned way- "They earned it." They especially deserve your consideration today because of their committment to continue manufacturing their products, at a competitive price, in the U.S.. Although price is certainly important when considering your next purchase, you should also consider that in this category especially, metal, the flood of inferior quality imports is making companies like Charleston Forge prove to be an exceptional value.

Although they only started in business in 1994, Chatham Furniture is already putting pressure on older, more established companies because of their emphasis on making solid wood furniture, in the U.S., at great prices and in a good selection of styles. The list of their construction features is impressive: 3/4" solid wood tops, sides and drawer fronts - no veneers. Tongue and groove construction and extra strong mortise and tenon joints. Corners are mitered for invisible joinery, their bases are a full-base construction, something not usually seen in this price range. All drawers are sanded, stained, sealed & lacquered inside with a snag-free finish that protects your clothes. Chatham uses solid brass hardware, not plated and a floating construction, a technique that prevents warping and "racking." Those are just some of the hidden details which give each piece its own unique look, a hand-made quality at a mass-assembly price. For the full list of quality features check out their web site.

Some of you kids will be too young to remember this, but back when the Beatles were hot it was also groovy to sleep on a waterbed. That's when Classic Corporation got their start, 1971, a great year by any standards. Everyone should experience a king-size single bag waterbed at some time in their life just to see how far we've come. It's like visiting Colonial Williamsburg, or Historic Deerfield, or an old Spanish Mission. "Wow," the kids say, "people actually lived like that?" Yes, and they thought it was bad. (Bad as in the sense it is used today, bad means good.) Anyway I digress. Classic Corporation was one of the leaders in the industry back then making waterbeds and waterbed products. You don't see too many waterbeds these days, and you see even fewer waterbed manufacturers. Fortunately, at least with one company, the concept of floating off to sleep on a cushion of water, or even air, has been kept alive. In 2000, Comfort Classics underwent a reinvention of itself to become Classic Sleep Products. A company driven by technology, innovative products and doing what they know best - sleep. They introduced a new line of latex and elastic memory foam mattresses in eight levels of comfort and price. The top mattress is covered with the finest cotton products from Belgium and filled with Joma wool from New Zealand. Check out their site for a dealer in your area. Although you probably haven't heard of them, they compete head to head with the best advertised names selling adjustable air mattress and adjustable beds, yes they also make tube design water beds. AND, hold it, and, I must add, this is the cool part, if you long for the good old days of drifting off to sleep while dreaming you're quietly floating in a raft down a lazy meandering river on a warm summer night, Classic Sleep Products still makes six different hardside waterbeds. Forget the sleep number system, forget the coils and springs and wires, this is pure waterbed cool.

Born over 100 years ago from the vision of entrepreneur and founder John Cochrane. John recognized opportunity to open a wood product manufacturing facility that could produce showcases and mantels. He became an instant success as mantels were sold by the trainload. By the early 1930's, the production of dining room furniture constructed of oak and pine assumed the role of leading product. As sales increased, the demand for early American dining room came into the picture and hard maple became the predominant material. Today's Cochrane Furniture Company has a much more diversified line that includes bedroom and upholstery with wood materials such as maple, oak, cherry and ash. Their reputation for excellent mid priced quality and value come from ageless construction techniques coupled with skill and pride of the craftsman. Construction techniques include:all wood drawer construction with finished interior; English and French dovetails drawers with wood on wood drawer glides; full wood dust proofing and wood backs on all cases; solid wood floating construction to permit the natural movement of tops, sides, door and bed panels reducing the splitting of wood during season changes.

Onorato Comitti, the founder of the company, came to England in 1845. As a skilled instrument maker he sought a new future in the land that was enjoying unprecedented prosperity generated by the Industrial Revolution. Mr Comitti established his workshops in London as a maker of barometers and related instruments and in a very short time his beautiful products were gracing the homes of discerning customers. It was during the late Victorian period that the company diversified into clockmaking. Many of the styles made in these early days continue to be available today. They are recognized as English classics and sought after as valuable antiques. Comitti remains a family run business. Today, the company is run by the grandsons of George Barker who married Louisa Comitti and joined the business in the 1890s. The Managing Director, Simon Barker, believes that the longevity of the business and its continued success is a tribute to the policy of carefully blending age-old craft skills with the most up to date technology, and the family nature of the company. “From generation to generation, we have looked to develop our skills and design a collection of clocks and barometers that will satisfy the aspirations and needs of our customers. We take great pride in our reputation for integrity, quality and service; indeed, we regard it as an imperative for our continued success in the next millennium.” Quotes and content from the factory website.

CONOVER CHAIR opened it's doors in 1927 with the idea of making a finely crafted, quality product at an affordable price. Over 70 years later, generations of skilled artisans are still hard at work creating our quality upholstery. All of their labor and finely tuned skills are most evident in the attention to detail, smooth padding and crisp tailoring. Less evident, though even more important, are the time honored methods and state of the art materials used to create these beautiful products. The end result is lasting beauty that is certain to be enjoyed for years to come.

From their website: "The Conrad Grebel Furniture Collection is a network of several small Amish & Mennonite woodshops located in Northern Indiana. Our unique network of meticulously chosen craftsmen works together to make some of the finest solid oak, cherry, and maple furniture available on the market today. Our craftsmen are some of the most remarkable woodworkers in the industry. Because of our quality standard, we are able to offer genuine heirloom furniture that you can pass on for generations.
Chad Gascho, founder and President of The Conrad Grebel Furniture Collection, was raised in the Mennonite Church where he and his wife Tera, along with their two children, are active to this day. Their Christian faith has always been very important to them and because of that faith, their values are represented in the quality of their furniture. In the Amish & Mennonite tradition, heirlooms become more priceless with each generation who inherits them. Chad’s goal with The Conrad Grebel Furniture Collection is to pass on the heirloom tradition by providing the finest handmade furniture so that other families too can pass an heirloom down to their next generations."

I like companies like Copeland. Family owned and operated with a strong work ethic, committment to the local community and a desire to make a quality products at an affordable price. Copeland started in 1976 making cider presses for orchards in the Vermont area. Like most furniture companies making a quality product they quickly moved to bedroom, dining room, media centers, occasional and home office. Today Copeland is producing maple, cherry and walnut furniture in designs that capitalize on the resurgence of the Arts and Crafts, Shaker, Mission and Scandinavian movements. They have one of the best "virtual" factory tours on-line that I've seen.

COUNTRY LIVING MAGAZINE

The definition of country has undergone a significant change in the past decade. No longer ducks, chickens and gingham cloth, country design is now broad enough to include an 1800's Bucks County, Pennsylvania farm house or a reproduction of a Swedish cottage in Nebraska. Despite this eclectic approach to comfort and warmth, country still has a distinctive look that can be defined. Country Living magazine takes you through this wonderful world each month with regular departments like "What Makes It Country", "Country Icons", "'Cross Country" and "Decorating".

I could spend weeks driving around Berks County Pennsylvania. The old stone houses, the farm buildings, the gardens, everything about it is so untouched and unspoiled. I hope the town council manages to hold the developers off as long as possible, it would be a shame to see this beautiful slice of American life turned into tacky track houses. How did I get on that? Oh, yeah. Right there in the middle of Berks County is this wonderful antique store that I could spend hours and hours browsing through. Just to breath the air slows life down and puts things into a better perspective. Well, anyway, a couple weeks ago I was walking through the store and I kept stopping at their upholstered pieces. They were beautiful in their simplicity and so perfect for the store because of their design and fabrics. I assumed they were custom made because the quality looked so good. Surprise suprise. I found out they were made by Country Manor Furniture in Maiden, North Carolina. The store owner was kind enough to let me look at their catalog. Everthing in there looked like it came straight out of an antique store, only instead of having to buy an actual antique that couldn't be sat on for fear of falling apart, this furniture was made to be lived in. And the fabrics... perfect. The colors and the patterns make time stand still.

Solid mahogany 18th century reproductions. Chippendale, Sheraton, Duncan Phyfe, Queen Anne, and Hepplewhite in dining room, bedroom, and occasional. Some of the construction techniques used by Craftique are hopelessly behind the technology of today, and Craftique is proud of that. Things like back panels fastened with brass screws instead of staples, "blocking"; every drawer bottom, hand rubbing all sides of a cabinet not just the top, and then there are the English dovetail joints (for you cabinet makers-the finest and strongest possible) and fully rabbetted drawer fronts. Through dozens of steps, a finish is applied that should last for many generations, which is exactly what Craftique had in mind. Mass production work is unheard of here, only hand craftsmenship and the finest attention to detail. Their best known lifestyle collections include the Thomas Day Collection and the Biltmore Collection.

Chandeliers, furniture, wall sconces table lamps, floor lamps and garden furniture. This is a lovely line with great looks throughout. You can trust the quality because it is designed to be sold in the finer furniture stores and through high-end decorators. Don't let that scare you though, their prices are reasonable and the selection is excellent. I've sold their products for many years and my customers have always been satisfied. They have a broad eclectic look which blends easily with almost any home decor. Although the online catalog is not very extensive, you will get the idea that many of the beautiful homes you see featured in magazines use this kind of furniture and accessories to give the special touch that really sets them apart.
